Bhutanese newspaper wants government to punish bad media

The Journalist, a weekly started by scribes who left another paper citing management interference, has asked the outgoing government why it has not been firm on unfair media coverage during its five-year tenure.

The editorial

The editorial said the first elected government was too lenient on the media and as ” it is the duty of parents to tell their children… when something goes wrong, it was and is the duty of the government to ensure that nobody, including the media goes astray.” The government has been too compassionate, it said, “and the compassionate path is not always the right one.”

Interestingly, two years back, the same paper came under flak for running a cartoon on its front page which accused the government for throttling free media.
